I Sweat the Small Stuff

Let's Get Small.jpg

I sweat the small stuff.

It’s the small stuff that either enhances or detracts from, or dilutes, the large stuff.

I remember hearing legendary Cleveland Orchestra Oboe player, John “Jack” Mack performing the Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4 with the Orchestra. Of course he played the famous solos with exquisite beauty and expression. But is was the other oboe stuff in the symphony, the dah dah dahs and other notes and lines, that I remember the most.

Those moments weren’t solos or meant to be heard first and foremost. They were supportive to the more important lines that were in the forefront. In a practically silent way, Mr. Mack helped bring forward those more important moments with the sgnificance the composer intended.

As pianist Lara Downes says, “Beauty is often found in quick moments and small details.”

I worry about not paying attention to those beauty-laden small details, and how ignoring them might bring down the valuable work we’re creating and providing.

Because I fear those detractions and dilutions – and because I believe in the hope and the potential of something small – I sweat the small stuff.
