The Five Second Rule: it's not just for the food you drop on the floor.

Five Second Rule.jpg

“The five-second rule, sometimes also the ten-second rule, is a western cultural food hygiene myth that states that there is a defined window where it is permissible to pick up food after it has been dropped and thus exposed to contamination.” (Wikipedia)

I’ve been visiting a lot of websites this past month, mostly ensembles, ensembles who perform important outreach for communities in need and some public radio stations.

Here’s what I’ve noticed: the donate or contribute now button is at the very top of the page. Then, the description of the ensemble, cause or the radio station appears below the contribute button.

You have 5 - 10 seconds to get a website visitor’s attention, with the hope that they will stay longer to get your story.

If the first thing I see is “give money,” I lose interest and most likely leave the site. How about you?

Wouldn’t it be better to tell the story of your group, your cause or your radio station and then ask for a contribution?

Give us a reason to give…first.
