Karen in the Middle

Hello again,

Some might call it the “elevator pitch., I call if the “Artist Statement,” a 30 second statement that tells people who you are, what you believe in or stand for and what kind of musician/composer you are. It will generate further interest in your art rather than just being a listing of your basic facts and accomplishments. Besides telling someone you’re an oboe player, it also tells your story.

Here’s someone I’m interested in getting to know and hearing her perform. This is her bio, but it also makes an excellent artist statement.

“Mattie is a middle child. Perhaps that explains why she is kind of obsessive about those middle parts - singing tenor, alto and mezzo whenever such a line presents itself. Another techie, she designs most of our CD art and our web pages. Right brain, left brain. She writes songs about the Sun and planets, as well as the occasional cautionary tale of gridlock.”

An artist statement also benefits you. It reinforces or reminds you of what you really do and why you do it.  It helps fuel all of your creative efforts on stage, in your practice studio, and helps shape other professional materials you produce, including your website, emails to bookers, the media and other influencers in a position to help you.
